New MediSpan Dosage Forms

MediSpan announced the addition of new dosage form codes on Friday, May 31, 2013.  This is significant because MediSpan previously was limited to 99 dosage forms.  The limit was due to the fact that the 6th couplet of the GPI (11th and 12th characters) defined the dosage form and the GPI only contained numbers.

The GPI will officially become an alphanumeric field on July 1, 2013 and that will raise the limit on the total number of dosage forms.  Also, MediSpan will only be using capital letters and the letters I or O will not be used to avoid confusion.  MediSpan has notified systems administrators of these changes; we hope you are prepared.

This update will enable MediSpan to be more flexible with dosage form additions.  MediSpan will add 38 new dosage forms to the drug database however not all of them will be used immediately.  MediSpan will be phasing in GPI changes that will use these new dosage forms.  PHSI works extensively with drug databases and is ready to determine how this may impact you.
