Overall biosimilar use accounted for more than $12.4 billion dollars in savings in 2023. This savings has continued to increase as biosimilar adoption has grown. In 2023, nine biosimilars for Humira (adalimumab) launched, with two having interchangeability designations from the FDA. However, according to the U.S. Generic and Biosimilar Medicines Savings Report 2024, adoption of adalimumab biosimilars has been particularly low. In the first 12 months following biosimilar launch, adalimumab biosimilar adoption was at one percent. In our October poll, PHSL asked respondents how uptake of Humira biosimilars compared to their expectations. Results are generally in alignment with the uptake seen in the first year as most respondents shared that biosimilar uptake is lower than expected. Below are a summary of results to this question.
How has Humira (adalimumab) biosimilar uptake over the past year compared to your expectations?
More uptake than expected: 0%
Uptake as expected: 45%
Less uptake than expected: 55%
